Disabled used as cure for AIDS

Disabled persons are being forced into sex as a cure for HIV/AIDS in Malawi, a respected news agency – AfricanNews has reported. This has put the lives of most disabled in danger as they go about their normal duties. The Department of Nutrition, HIV and AIDS of the President of Malawi alleged that it was dismayed with the number of complaints being received from the disabled that HIV positive patients are raping them as a cure for their ailment.

I shuddered. I read the news over and over again. I wiped and opened my eyes wide to get a clear understanding of what I was really reading. Honestly, I read the news piece for more than four times to believe it. “It is real but it’s also absurd,” I soliloquized.

Principal Secretary for the Department, Dr. Mary Shawa, said her office had received complaints from individuals who had been raped or forced into sex with the belief that the disabled are a cure for HIV and AIDS. “These things are true and, to us, it is a shame because the disabled are not a cure for HIV and AIDS; it is just a misconception,” said Shawa.

Personally, I find it difficult to believe the perpetrators are rational. Their actions are remote and have no scientific backing. It is just one of “African Beliefs.” Sometimes people should really think through their thoughts before carrying them out. As Galileo Gallilei a frontline Thinker said, ‘I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.’

Hmnnn… strange things are happening in Africa whiles the rest of the world is fast moving forward.

why do you believe this story? There are no real facts that justify the headline. How many complaints did the doctor receive? One? One Hundred? One thousand? Did all of the complainants say they were used by HIV patients? Is there one HIV patient quoted in the story to say that they use disabled people for this? Wouldn’t you demand more from a story in the New York Times?
